CHAPTER 25
THE PHONE STARTLED ERIN FROM A SOUND SLEEP. AS SHE FELT FOR it in the dark, she squinted at the clockâ12:12 a.m. Her immediate thought was that something happened to her mom, but when she found the phone she saw it was Duane calling.
âHello,â she mumbled.
âWhere are you?!â Duane screamed.
She looked at the phone. Swish never screamed. âIn bed; asleep. Swish, whatâs going on?â
âCheck your place. Make sure youâre safe.â
âIâm fine,â she said.
âHumor meâcheck!â he demanded. âAnd take the phone with you in case.â
She reached over and turned on the lamp on her night table. Deciding this would go faster if she just did what he wanted, she hauled herself out of bed and roamed her apartment, flicking on lights as she went and checking to make sure the door was locked. âOkay, everythingâs fine,â she said when she was finished. âNow, do you mind telling me what this is all about?â
âIâm on my way to Trinitas Hospital.â
âWhy? Whatâs wrong?â she asked, suddenly wide awake.
âThey came after JJ tonight and, from what he managed to tell me, he was beaten up pretty badly. In the course of it they told him if he didnât tell them where Rojas was you were going to be killed.â
âOh my God, did he tell them where David is?â
âNo. He managed to fight them off. But heâs convinced theyâre coming for you tonight. Until I can get to you, Iâm going to call Mark and tell him to come over.â
She recoiled involuntarily. âNo! Donât involve Mark in this. Besides, Iâm three blocks from police headquartersâthey can be here in two minutes.â
She walked to the front window to peek out and see if there were any suspicious cars only to find the strobe of police lights bouncing off the parked cars and the tree line on the other side of Riverside Drive. She pulled her curtains back and tried to peer down the street, but the side of the building blocked her view.
âUh, Swish.â
âYeah.â
âBased on what I can see, Iâm guessing there are several police cars farther down Riverside. I can see their lights going. Iâm going to throw on some clothes and see whatâs going on.â
âNo! Stay put.â
âSwish, the cops are already here. Trust me, my neighbors are nosey enough that theyâll know whatâs going on.â
âE, please.â
âTalk to you in a few.â
Fifteen minutes later she called him back.
âItâs a good thing you arenât dead, because Iâm going to kill you,â he said when he answered the phone. âDo you understand you were targeted tonight?â
âHowâs JJ?â she asked, ignoring his comment.
âHeâs pretty banged up, with a fractured right radius and probably a concussion. But feeling much better knowing that youâre alive. What did you find out?â
âAccording to nosey neighbor number one, around eleven thirty the police arrested two men on the corner right down from my building. Both of them had handguns. According to nosey neighbors two and three those handguns had silencers. Swish, if youâre at the hospital, what about Cori and Austin?â
âTheyâre okay. Thereâs a black-and-white sitting in front of my house.
